Not that long ago, carrying a separate music player was perfectly normal. Then smartphones took over, streaming largely removed the need to keep a personal library of files in your pocket, and traditional MP3 players all but disappeared from everyday life. Curiously, they are now starting to make a comeback - not by trying to compete with phones on features, but by doing the exact opposite. In an age when one device serves as a music player, camera, messenger, payment terminal, entertainment hub, and a constant source of notifications, there is something increasingly appealing about a gadget designed to do one thing and do it well. FiiO is tapping into that idea with the Snowsky Echo Nano, a tiny portable player that looks as though it has arrived straight from the early 2000s, but hides thoroughly modern hardware inside and has no intention of being just a nostalgic toy.

Marantz is refreshing the entry point to its traditional hi-fi range with two full-size components - the Model 70 integrated amplifier and the matching CD 70 player. The new duo follows in the footsteps of the popular PM6007 and CD6007, but the transition involves considerably more than a change of model numbers. Both products adopt the visual language previously associated with more expensive Marantz components, while the amplifier gains HDMI ARC, two-way Bluetooth connectivity and a revised amplification section. The CD player, meanwhile, combines conventional disc playback with high-resolution files from USB storage.

FiiO has introduced the EH13, a pair of wireless over-ear headphones that look like an attempt to bring several typically audiophile features into a very affordable part of the market. The specification includes LDAC codec support, Hi-Res Audio and Hi-Res Audio Wireless certification, active noise cancellation, Bluetooth 6.0, app-based sound settings, wired operation and battery life of up to 75 hours. Not long ago, a list like that in headphones this inexpensive would have sounded like a wishful forum post, but FiiO clearly wants to show that even an entry-level model can receive features normally associated with more expensive designs.

Focal has introduced the Diva Alta Utopia, the most advanced model in its family of active wireless loudspeakers developed in partnership with Naim. The French brand is clearly positioning this system very high - not as a luxury network speaker for an elegant living room, but as a fully fledged high-end system intended to replace a traditional stereo set-up made up of loudspeakers, amplifiers, streamer, DAC, cables and the rest of the usual audiophile infrastructure. The difference is that here, everything has been built into large active loudspeakers.

FiiO is expanding its range of desktop audio equipment with the Level 1, a compact integrated amplifier designed to drive passive loudspeakers. The new model combines a Class D power amplifier, a built-in digital-to-analogue converter, Bluetooth connectivity, traditional tone controls and outputs allowing the system to be expanded with an active subwoofer or an external power amplifier. All of this is housed in an aluminium enclosure with wooden side panels. The Level 1 is slightly different from the products with which the Chinese company has traditionally been most closely associated. Rather than another portable player or DAC with a headphone amplifier, it is intended to serve as the heart of a proper stereo system built around conventional passive loudspeakers. This may explain why the front panel carries the JadeAudio logo. Owned by FiiO, the brand is positioned as a younger, more modern alternative with a particularly strong focus on value for money. JadeAudio benefits from FiiO's technical resources, engineering experience and proprietary solutions, but products developed under this project carry their own JadeAudio branding.

Topping has introduced the E50 II, a compact pure DAC with preamp functionality and no onboard headphone amplifier. The new model joins the company's popular E Series of budget-friendly converters and is designed for desktop systems, hi-fi setups, active speakers, separate headphone amplifiers and even more demanding studio-oriented use. It is a small device, but the feature set is unusually broad, combining a modern AKM DAC chip, balanced and single-ended outputs, high-resolution USB input, Bluetooth, app control and a sophisticated parametric EQ system.

For Luxman, the physical disc has never been treated as a format from the past. The new D-100 Centennial, created to mark the Japanese company's 100th anniversary, shows how far the brand is still willing to take SACD and CD playback while also turning the player into a reference-class DAC for modern high-resolution sources. As the successor to the D-10X, it is not merely an anniversary edition with a special nameplate, but a comprehensively redesigned flagship source component with a new disc transport, renewed digital processing, an updated analog output stage and the latest version of Luxman's LIFES feedback engine.

Topping has built much of its reputation on DACs and headphone amplifiers that combine ambitious engineering with unusually strong measured performance. The DX9 Discrete takes that formula into a more premium and more distinctive direction. It is a fully balanced DAC, preamplifier and headphone amplifier in one compact chassis, but its main point of interest is not the number of functions it combines. The real story is the conversion architecture. Instead of relying on an off-the-shelf DAC chip, Topping has used its own discrete 1-bit PSRM technology, bringing one of the company's most advanced digital designs into an all-in-one component for headphones, active speakers and conventional hi-fi systems.

JPLAY has received a major update that expands the app with one of the most requested features in its recent history - full support for the HQPlayer library. For hi-fi users, this may be a more significant change than a simple feature list would suggest, because JPLAY has never positioned itself as just another app for playing music. From the beginning, it has functioned as a specialized control center for listeners using streamers, network DACs, services such as Qobuz, Tidal and HighResAudio, and local UPnP libraries. Now it adds the ability to browse and control an HQPlayer library directly from within JPLAY, alongside dynamic Smart Playlists, a completely new History screen with a calendar view and several refinements based on community feedback. The update is available in the latest version of the app as a free upgrade for existing users through the App Store.

Astell&Kern has introduced the PD20, a new premium portable audio player that combines the Korean brand's familiar idea of a self-contained high-end source with unusually advanced sound personalization. In an era in which many listeners use a smartphone as their main music device, such a product may seem like a niche proposition, but this is precisely the field in which Astell&Kern has built its reputation over the years. The PD20 is not another all-purpose gadget. It is a dedicated player for users who want a local hi-res music library, high-quality headphone outputs, a serious DAC section, support for high-resolution formats and the ability to adjust the behavior of the amplifier stage to suit different headphones.
