Grado Signature S550
Grado Labs revealed the Signature S550, the latest addition to its growing Signature Line of open-back headphones and the fourth model in the series following the earlier S950 and S750 variants. Designed as a wood-housed dynamic headphone tuned for a warmer and more relaxed presentation than some traditional Grado designs, the S550 combines the company's 50 mm S2 driver platform with Brazilian walnut earcups and a modular cable architecture intended to support both desktop and portable listening systems.
Rather than introducing an entirely new transducer platform, Grado has focused on optimizing the interaction between its existing S2 dynamic driver and the acoustic behavior of the wooden enclosure. The result is a tuning described as fuller and more forgiving while preserving the speed, immediacy, and imaging precision associated with the brand's open-back designs. The driver operates across a specified frequency range of 6 Hz to 44 kHz, with total harmonic distortion rated below 0.2 percent at 100 dB and channel matching maintained within 0.05 dB, indicating a level of manufacturing consistency typically associated with higher-tier Grado models.
A defining feature of the Signature S550 is its use of Brazilian walnut for the earcup housings. Wood has long played a central role in Grado's headphone construction philosophy, not only as a visual signature but also as an acoustic element influencing resonance behavior and tonal balance. In the S550, the walnut structure is intended to support a slightly richer midrange character while maintaining openness and transient clarity. As with previous wood-bodied Grado headphones, natural grain variation means each pair is visually unique.
The S550 also introduces a detachable cable architecture based on 4-pin balanced mini-XLR connectors at the earcups, aligning the model with the company's newer modular cabling ecosystem. The supplied Signature Silver cable terminates in a 3.5 mm plug and includes a 6.3 mm adapter, while alternative balanced cable options are available separately for use with dedicated headphone amplifiers and balanced outputs. Compared with earlier fixed-cable Grado designs, the new system improves long-term serviceability and system compatibility across a wider range of playback setups.
Comfort and fit have also been updated through the inclusion of Grado's B Cushions and the newer Signature headband assembly. This structure combines a leather headband with internal metal reinforcement, engraved metal gimbals, stainless-steel height rods, and strengthened junction blocks intended to improve durability and stability over extended listening sessions. The narrower leather strap design first introduced on the Signature S750 is retained here, contributing to a more secure fit without significantly increasing weight. At 335 g without cable, the S550 remains relatively lightweight for a full-size open-back headphone in this category.
Within the company's broader lineup, the Signature Line represents a premium tier positioned between Grado's traditional Reference and Statement series models and its newer modular-generation designs. Rather than pursuing radical acoustic departures, the series emphasizes incremental refinement through material selection, driver matching precision, and improved ergonomics, with each model offering a distinct tonal balance built around the same core engineering platform.
