Denon AVR-S980H
Denon unveiled the AVR-S980H, a new 7.2-channel AV receiver designed as a central hub for contemporary home entertainment systems combining surround sound, streaming, and gaming functionality in a single chassis. Positioned as a step-up solution for users moving beyond soundbars and entry-level audio setups, the new model is intended to deliver a more immersive listening experience while remaining approachable in everyday installation and operation. According to Denon, the receiver reflects a broader shift toward flexible systems that adapt to modern households where television viewing, music streaming, and gaming increasingly share the same platform.
At the core of the AVR-S980H is a seven-channel amplifier section rated at 90 watts per channel, providing sufficient output for dynamic multichannel playback and compatibility with a wide range of loudspeaker configurations. The receiver supports Dolby Atmos and DTS:X decoding and can operate in a 5.1.2 immersive layout, while also allowing users to begin with a simpler stereo setup and expand gradually into full surround configurations without replacing the central electronics. This scalability remains one of the defining characteristics of Denon's midrange AV receiver platform and positions the model as a long-term foundation for evolving home cinema systems.
Video connectivity reflects current display standards, with support for 8K pass-through and 4K upscaling alongside Dolby Vision, HDR10+, Hybrid Log-Gamma, and Dynamic HDR formats. HDMI connectivity includes eARC support for simplified integration with modern televisions, enabling high-resolution audio transmission through a single cable while maintaining compatibility with streaming platforms and broadcast content delivered directly through the display.
Beyond film and television playback, Denon has placed particular emphasis on gaming performance. The AVR-S980H supports 1440p pass-through together with AMD FreeSync, helping reduce motion artifacts and latency in fast-moving scenes. Additional HDMI gaming features include Variable Refresh Rate, Quick Frame Transport, and Auto Low Latency Mode, aligning the receiver with current-generation consoles and gaming PCs while reinforcing its role as a multi-purpose entertainment controller rather than a cinema-only component.
Wireless functionality forms another key part of the platform. The receiver integrates fully with Denon's HEOS multiroom ecosystem, allowing music to be distributed across multiple rooms and synchronized with compatible wireless speakers. A future firmware update will introduce support for using Denon Home 200, 400, and 600 speakers as wireless surround channels, expanding installation flexibility in spaces where conventional rear speaker wiring is impractical. This capability reflects Denon's ongoing effort to bridge the gap between traditional AV receivers and modular wireless home audio systems.
Network streaming support includes AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, Bluetooth audio transmission, and playback of high-resolution audio formats, allowing the receiver to function not only as a surround processor but also as a standalone music platform. Two subwoofer outputs are provided for improved low-frequency integration, while Audyssey MultEQ room correction enables automatic acoustic optimization tailored to the listening environment.
Ease of installation remains a central part of the AVR-S980H concept. Denon's guided setup assistant provides step-by-step configuration through the connected television, reducing the complexity traditionally associated with AV receiver installation. After setup, the system can be controlled through a mobile application or a browser-based interface, offering multiple control paths depending on user preference. The receiver also supports multi-source, multi-zone playback, allowing independent audio distribution between rooms. The Denon AVR-S980H will be available through authorized retailers worldwide, with a suggested retail price of $949/€899/£799. Info and photos by Denon.
