Hegel H150
Hegel has announced the launch of the H150 streaming amplifier - an all-in-one hi-fi solution designed to combine versatility, musical refinement and ease of use in a compact, elegantly built chassis. Positioned as the successor to the H120, the H150 bridges the gap between affordability and audiophile performance, offering much of the same technology found in Hegel's flagship models, including the company's advanced streaming platform, app control and patented SoundEngine 2 amplification. Nicknamed 'The Prodigy', the H150 embodies Hegel's philosophy that true excellence should be accessible. While sitting at the entry point of the Norwegian manufacturer's integrated range, it demonstrates the sonic maturity and control more often associated with far costlier components. Delivering 2 x 75 watts into 8 ohms, it is capable of driving demanding loudspeakers with confidence, combining precision, scale and authority that far exceed expectations for its size and price.
The amplifier features a Class AB topology powered by a custom toroidal transformer and high-speed capacitors, ensuring instantaneous current delivery and exceptional dynamic control. Hegel's proprietary SoundEngine 2 technology eliminates crossover distortion and preserves fine detail, maintaining low noise and a damping factor exceeding 2000. The result is a sound that feels natural, powerful and transparent, with an engaging musical flow that encourages long listening sessions.
Internally, the H150 houses a new four-layer digital-to-analogue converter inspired by the company's acclaimed Viking CD player. This advanced DAC architecture delivers exceptional clarity, texture and tonal depth across all sources. Combined with Hegel's fully digital volume control and precision analogue stage, the H150 ensures signal integrity from input to output.
The amplifier is equally adept as a modern network streamer. Out of the box, it supports Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect, Qobuz Connect, Apple AirPlay, Google Cast and UPnP, with Roon Ready certification pending. Regular firmware updates expand compatibility with new services, keeping the platform current without user intervention. Streaming management, internet radio and podcast access are integrated into the Hegel Control app, offering intuitive control from any smartphone or tablet.
Connectivity is a major highlight. The rear panel includes two optical and one coaxial digital input, a coaxial output, USB-B for direct computer connection, Ethernet networking, and for the first time in a Hegel amplifier, a USB-A port for connecting flash drives or external hard disks. Analogue sources are handled through both balanced (XLR) and unbalanced (RCA) inputs, while vinyl enthusiasts benefit from a built-in Moving Magnet phono stage engineered to rival standalone preamps. The H150 also features a headphone output and a variable line-level output for easy integration with subwoofers or external power amplifiers.
Ease of operation was a central design goal. The H150 automatically wakes and selects the correct source when a signal is detected, while adjustable auto-standby saves energy after playback. Popular TV remote codes are pre-loaded for straightforward system control, and any input can be set to fixed volume, enabling seamless integration with external systems. Multi-room playback via AirPlay, Google Cast or Roon allows effortless synchronisation with other devices, while voice commands through Google Home and Apple Home make the amplifier even more approachable.
Aesthetically, the H150 maintains Hegel's minimalist design language, available in black or white finishes. The 35-cm-deep chassis fits comfortably on most shelves or media units, with a precision-milled aluminium front panel, solid steel top cover and perforated ventilation pattern enhancing both durability and visual appeal. The central OLED display offers crisp, dimmable readouts and complements the understated industrial look. Compact yet confident, the H150 demonstrates that high-end performance need not come in large or expensive packages. It embodies Hegel's pursuit of musical purity through technical innovation - a modern amplifier that delivers genuine high-fidelity for contemporary listeners. The H150 streaming amplifier is available now at an estimated retail price of €2,995. Info and photos by Hegel.
