Snowsky Disc
FiiO has introduced the Snowsky Disc, a portable high-resolution audio player that leans deliberately into nostalgia for classic disc-based portables while relying entirely on modern digital hardware. This compact circular player is aimed at listeners who enjoy physical interaction and the visual language of older audio gear, but do not want to give up the convenience of file playback, hi-res support and compatibility with contemporary listening systems. Its chassis is made from aluminium alloy, while the front is dominated by a round touchscreen used not only for playback control but also for album art and lyric display. During playback, the interface can simulate a spinning disc, reinforcing the visual link with traditional Discman-style devices even though the music itself comes from microSD storage or wireless streaming rather than any physical medium.
The audio section is built around a dual CS43131 DAC configuration, a solution often chosen for its strong balance of sound quality, efficiency and compact implementation. According to FiiO, the DAC stage works with an Ingenic X2000 platform and supports PCM up to 384 kHz/32-bit as well as DSD128. Maximum output reaches 280 mW into 32 ohms from the balanced output, which should make the Snowsky Disc suitable not only for typical portable headphones and in-ear monitors but also for a broader range of more demanding designs when used from the 4.4 mm socket. The player includes both 3.5 mm single-ended and 4.4 mm balanced headphone outputs, and it can also function as a USB DAC for a computer or as a digital transport thanks to S/PDIF output available through the 3.5 mm connection. In practice, that gives it a wider role than a simple pocket music player, allowing it to sit in a desktop setup, a travel system or even a larger hi-fi chain.
Wireless and network functionality are also a significant part of the design. Built-in Wi-Fi allows AirPlay support and over-the-air firmware updates, while Bluetooth 5.4 with LDAC makes it possible to use the player wirelessly with compatible headphones and speakers at a higher standard than basic SBC connections. Local storage is handled via a microSD slot supporting cards up to 2 TB, which is enough to carry a substantial lossless or hi-res library. FiiO also includes a set of software-based retro sound effects intended to give playback a more nostalgic flavour for users who want to experiment with that aspect of the player's identity.
Power comes from a built-in 1450 mAh battery rated for up to 12 hours of playback, and combined with the player's compact format this makes the Snowsky Disc a device clearly designed for everyday portable use. It is offered in several colour finishes, underlining the fact that visual character is part of the appeal as much as the technical specification. International pricing varies by retailer, but current listings place it at around £79/€89/$79. Info and photos by FiiO.
