FiiO DM15 R2R
There are now two parallel trends becoming increasingly visible in the portable audio market - a renewed interest in physical media and a growing appetite for digital conversion methods associated with a more traditional, more "analog" presentation. The FiiO DM15 R2R sits squarely at the intersection of those two ideas, combining the format of a portable CD player with an advanced R2R DAC and a feature set more commonly associated with modern network players and desktop DACs. It is aimed at listeners who do not want to give up their compact disc collections, but still expect serious output power, a balanced signal path, USB DAC functionality and high-resolution wireless transmission. At its current market positioning, the DM15 R2R enters a category in which genuinely audiophile-minded portable CD players remain relatively rare.
At the heart of the device is FiiO's own digital-to-analogue converter based on an R2R ladder architecture, built around a fully differential 24-bit resistor array. Unlike the delta-sigma chips that dominate most portable designs, converters of this type are often chosen by enthusiasts for a presentation many describe as more natural and more closely aligned with the character of classic digital playback. In the DM15 R2R, FiiO has implemented a fully differential 24-bit R2R DAC using 192 resistors in total, and presents it not as a novelty but as a serious audio circuit intended to extract more nuance, texture and dynamic contrast from CD playback than a typical integrated solution.
The headphone amplification stage has also been designed with more demanding use cases in mind. Output power reaches 1150 mW + 1150 mW in balanced mode, which should be sufficient for a wide range of full-size dynamic headphones as well as many portable and semi-desktop planar models. The player offers both 3.5 mm single-ended and 4.4 mm balanced headphone outputs, alongside a multifunction 3-in-1 socket that can operate as a line output, coaxial digital output or optical output. In practice, that allows the DM15 R2R to function not only as a portable CD player, but also as a source in a domestic hi-fi system or as a CD transport feeding an external DAC.
The use of an R2R converter does not limit the player to disc playback alone. The DM15 R2R can also work as an external USB sound card, accepting signals up to 384 kHz/32-bit PCM and DSD256, which makes it viable as a desktop DAC and headphone amplifier when connected to a computer. It can also operate as a Bluetooth 5.4 transmitter, with support for aptX Adaptive, aptX HD and SBC on FiiO's own materials, while retail listings in some regions also mention LDAC support. That combination allows the player to bridge an old-format source such as CD with more contemporary listening habits, whether wired or wireless. Because retailer specifications are not entirely consistent on the codec list, LDAC is best treated here as a market listing claim rather than a universally confirmed official specification.
The DM15 R2R has been designed as a compact unit intended for use both at home and on the move. Its built-in 4700 mAh lithium-polymer battery is rated for around seven hours of continuous playback, and the aluminium chassis keeps the player reasonably compact at 144 x 137 x 25.5 mm with a weight of 471.5 g. FiiO also includes 24 preset sound profiles, allowing the user to tailor the presentation to different material or listening preferences without relying on external equalisation. The overall result is a machine that tries to make CD playback more flexible and more contemporary rather than simply nostalgic.
In visual terms, the DM15 R2R continues FiiO's established approach of combining a modern, technical design language with cues that still feel appropriate for a player built around physical media. The manufacturer has announced several colour options, including silver, red, black and white, which should make it easier to match the unit to the rest of a system or simply to personal taste. Its compact dimensions and battery power suggest use not only in a home system, but also while travelling, at work or in any situation where the user wants access to CDs without turning to a full-size stationary deck. The FiiO DM15 R2R reached the market around mid-February 2026, and current pricing places it at approximately £249/$269/€229, depending on region and retailer. Info and photos by FiiO.
