Meze Audio Astru

Meze Audio is expanding its in-ear monitor range with the new Astru, a model positioned as the company's flagship single dynamic-driver IEM. It is aimed at listeners looking for the highest possible sound quality from a relatively simple driver architecture, without moving into the price territory of the most exclusive multi-driver high-end designs. The Romanian manufacturer emphasises that Astru is not intended to compete through driver count or catalogue complexity, but rather to develop a long-standing design philosophy built around the idea that a single carefully engineered driver can deliver high resolution, convincing layering and a spacious, coherent presentation.

Over the years, Meze Audio has built its reputation on combining distinctive industrial design, high manufacturing standards and its own approach to headphone tuning. With Astru, that philosophy is applied to a top-tier single dynamic-driver in-ear design. The company focuses on advanced materials, precise machining and construction methods intended not only to deliver strong technical performance but also to maintain comfort during extended listening sessions.

At the heart of the new model is a 10 mm dynamic driver built around a multilayer composite diaphragm. According to Meze Audio, the dome is formed from more than 80 ultra-thin layers of gold applied during a 48-hour vacuum magnetron sputtering process. This structure is then combined with a titanium layer and mounted on a PEEK substrate. The manufacturer states that this configuration is intended to improve transient response, extend high-frequency detail and produce a naturally warm tonal balance with clearly defined low-frequency impact typical of well-tuned dynamic drivers.

Particular attention has also been given to the housings. Each earpiece is machined from a solid block of pure titanium using CNC processing and then finished through a multi-stage electroplating procedure designed to achieve a smooth satin surface. Meze Audio notes that preparing a matched pair of housings can take up to seven days of precision work. In practical terms, this approach is meant to underline both the level of craftsmanship and the effort devoted to consistency and ergonomics. The shell geometry itself has been shaped to remain comfortable during long listening sessions.

Astru is delivered as a complete package intended for both portable and home listening setups. The supplied cable is a balanced design with anodised aluminium hardware and a 4.4 mm gold-plated plug, accompanied by a 4.4 mm to 3.5 mm adapter, silicone ear tips in five sizes from XS to XL, a durable travel case and an additional soft PU leather pouch. The inclusion of a balanced cable as standard suggests that the model is aimed not only at smartphone users and compact DAC dongles, but also at listeners using dedicated portable players and more advanced headphone systems.

In terms of specifications, Meze Audio lists a frequency response of 5 Hz to 35 kHz, impedance of 32 ohms, sensitivity of 111 dB and total harmonic distortion below 0.1% at 1 kHz. The earphones use standard 2-pin connectors, and the weight of the earpieces is 13.4 g. According to the manufacturer, Astru is intended to demonstrate the continuing potential of single dynamic-driver designs and to show that a rich, detailed and engaging presentation does not have to be limited to the most expensive in-ear monitors on the market. The Meze Audio Astru is expected to become available from April 2026, with international pricing anticipated at around €899/$999/£799. Info and photos by Meze Audio.
