Ophidian Skye

Ophidian has introduced the Skye, a new floorstanding loudspeaker that expands the British manufacturer's S-series with a model intended to combine full-range performance, compact domestic proportions, and a more traditional furniture-grade finish. Designed and assembled in the UK, the new speaker joins the standmount Seren as the second entry in this mid-priced range, giving Ophidian a floorstander for listeners who want deeper bass and greater scale without moving into the company's higher-tier Incanto and Voodoo lines.

Standing a little over a meter tall, Skye is sized to deliver serious low-frequency output while remaining manageable in modern living spaces. The cabinet is offered in oak or walnut real-wood veneer, and the overall concept appears to balance classic styling with a more technically ambitious acoustic package underneath. That combination has long been part of Ophidian's appeal, but here it is being applied to a speaker positioned as a more accessible route into the brand's larger floorstanding designs.

The core of the design is an M-T-M driver layout using two 180 mm alloy bass drivers flanking a centrally mounted tweeter. Ophidian says the cone-to-surround junction of the bass drivers is indexed to improve the transition behavior through the critical vocal region, while bass loading is handled by the company's Aeroflex system, which is intended to combine stronger bass dynamics and speed with lower distortion in the bottom octaves. The port structure also contributes to cabinet bracing, helping control unwanted resonance.

High frequencies are handled by a SEAS tweeter sourced from Norway. The unit uses a wide-roll surround for higher power handling and controlled dispersion, while the one-piece diaphragm and surround are coated with Sonolex for improved damping. Ophidian says the crossover has been optimized specifically for the M-T-M arrangement in order to maintain a smooth off-axis response, which is especially important in a floorstander likely to be used in larger, more open listening spaces.

The crossover network itself uses premium parts from Mundorf, including air-core coils, polypropylene capacitors, and non-inductive metal-oxide resistors. Taken together with the cabinet design and driver selection, the aim is clearly to position Skye as a speaker that does not rely on visual drama or unusual form factors, but instead on careful engineering choices intended to produce a balanced, controlled, and musically convincing presentation.

Ophidian is a British loudspeaker manufacturer focused on domestically assembled speaker systems that combine compact proportions, distinctive bass-loading solutions, and premium drive units. With Skye, the company is extending that approach into a new floorstanding model aimed at listeners who want more scale and bass authority without stepping into substantially larger or more expensive designs. Skye is priced in the UK at £3,995 including VAT in either oak or walnut veneer. International pricing will be announced later through Ophidian's distribution network. Info and photos by Ophidian.
