Noble Audio Lu Ban

Noble Audio has introduced Lu Ban, a new statement hybrid in-ear monitor in its universal IEM lineup. The model combines a 10-mm wooden composite diaphragm dynamic driver with two newly developed Super-Magnetic planar drivers. The idea is not simply to add another multi-driver construction to Noble's catalog, but to combine natural diaphragm materials with a fast, technically capable magnetic driver system in a way that gives the earphones both physical weight and high-frequency precision. The name refers to Lu Ban, the legendary Chinese craftsman associated with precision, invention and mastery of materials. That reference is reflected both in the acoustic design and in the physical construction of the earphones.

Each shell combines Cocobolo wood with a high-precision 3D-printed resin internal framework. The wood has been chosen not only for its appearance, but also for its structural properties and distinctive grain pattern, while the printed internal structure is intended to maintain accurate driver placement and repeatable acoustic geometry from pair to pair. As a result, each set has small visual differences in the wood grain, but remains built to Noble's acoustic and manufacturing standards.

At the center of Lu Ban's sound is the 10-mm wooden composite diaphragm dynamic driver. Noble points to the long use of wood in musical instruments, where its resonance and tonal character have been valued for centuries. In Lu Ban, the wooden composite diaphragm is used to give the low frequencies depth, control and texture. The company describes the sub-bass as confident and free from overhang, while the mid-bass is intended to remain articulate and balanced rather than thick or excessive.

The same driver also plays an important role in the midrange. According to Noble, the wooden composite material contributes harmonic richness and realism, giving vocals body and presence while allowing acoustic instruments to retain natural decay and weight. The company is careful to frame this not as added artificial warmth, but as the result of material engineering. In other words, the dynamic driver is meant to provide the emotional and tonal foundation of Lu Ban, giving the presentation a sense of naturalness and physicality.

The second half of the hybrid design is formed by two Super-Magnetic planar drivers. Noble describes this system as a significant step beyond conventional planar implementations. The new architecture uses ultra-high magnetic energy neodymium iron boron material, refined with a precisely controlled copper element to optimize magnetic flux stability and efficiency. The intended result is faster transient response, improved micro-detail retrieval and greater precision in the upper frequencies.

These planar drivers are responsible for clarity, air and separation. Noble says high frequencies extend cleanly without glare, while complex passages remain layered and intelligible even in demanding recordings. The design goal is therefore a clear division of responsibilities. The wooden dynamic driver supplies weight, texture and tonal density, while the planar drivers add speed, openness and resolution. Together, they are intended to create a hybrid presentation that balances natural tone with technical accuracy.

Lu Ban has a sensitivity of 108 dB SPL/mW and an impedance of 27 ohms, which should make it suitable for use with a wide range of sources. It is not presented as an extremely difficult IEM to drive, but the use of a balanced cable and a 4.4-mm termination suggests that Noble expects it to be used with capable portable players, dongles, headphone amplifiers and modern balanced outputs.

The supplied cable is a 4-strand woven high-purity OCC silver-plated design. It uses a fiber-woven surface coating, standard 0.78-mm 2-pin connectors with left and right markings, and a 4.4-mm copper gold-plated balanced plug. The package also includes an IEM storage box, an ear tip storage box, nine pairs of ear tips and a warranty service card. The Noble Lu Ban is available through selected retailers worldwide and is priced at €1499/£1299/$1399. Info and photos by Noble Audio.
