Gold Note HP-5.2

The HP-5.2 follows the path established by the company's HP-10, but presents the concept in a more compact and accessible Series 5.2 form. At its core is a balanced dual-mono Class A architecture built with discrete components. Gold Note says this approach is intended to preserve signal purity, reduce distortion and maintain control over a wide range of headphones. The amplifier delivers up to 5 W of output power, which should make it suitable for demanding planar magnetic headphones as well as easier-to-drive dynamic models and sensitive in-ear monitors. Adjustable gain allows the user to adapt the output to different headphone types, with low, mid and high settings available.

One of the most distinctive elements of the HP-5.2 is the Studio Suite, a group of processing and adjustment tools implemented entirely in the analog domain. This is an important distinction, because Gold Note is not positioning these functions as conventional DSP filters applied after digital conversion. Instead, the company presents them as real-time analog tools that allow the user to adapt the behavior of the amplifier and headphones without adding digital artifacts.

The Studio Suite includes adjustable Crossfeed, designed to blend the left and right channels in order to create a more natural, loudspeaker-like soundstage. The function can be applied across the full spectrum or focused on specific frequency ranges - highs, mids or lows. This can be useful for listeners who find traditional headphone stereo presentation too strongly separated between left and right channels, especially with older recordings or albums mixed primarily for loudspeaker playback.

The HP-5.2 also includes a Harman option, intended to optimize headphone listening by applying equalization inspired by the Harman target curve. Another mode, called Superflat, linearizes the high-frequency response for greater accuracy. Damping Factor adjustment allows the user to choose between high and low settings in order to better match the impedance behavior of different headphones, while the Balance function provides precise left/right level adjustment. This can be useful not only for compensating for hearing differences, but also for fine-matching headphone drivers or correcting slight asymmetries in a system.

Connectivity is unusually broad for a headphone amplifier of this size. The HP-5.2 is equipped with one unbalanced RCA input accepting up to 5 Vrms and one balanced XLR input accepting up to 8 Vrms. Digital connectivity includes Bluetooth 5.2 HD aptX at 24-bit quality and a USB-C input supporting PCM up to 48 kHz. The digital section uses a SABRE DAC, allowing the amplifier to work directly with smartphones, tablets, computers or digital transports without requiring a separate converter. The unit also supports Bluetooth output, and users can connect Bluetooth headphones directly through the touchscreen interface.

The front panel provides four headphone outputs. There are two unbalanced connections - 3.5 mm and 6.3 mm - plus two balanced outputs, one 4.4 mm and one 4-pin XLR. This makes the HP-5.2 compatible with a wide range of headphones and cables without adapters. Stereo and mono playback modes are also available, giving the amplifier additional flexibility for different recordings and listening needs.

The HP-5.2 can also function as a line preamplifier. Its rear panel includes both RCA and XLR line outputs, and when these are selected, the unit can apply the Studio Suite settings to the main system. This means the HP-5.2 does not have to be treated purely as a headphone amplifier. It can become part of a larger setup, sitting between sources and a power amplifier or active loudspeakers.

Gold Note has also included a bypass function for systems that already use a preamplifier. The idea is to allow the HP-5.2 to be integrated without changing the existing wiring every time the user switches between headphone and loudspeaker listening. Bypass mode is activated by selecting one of the four front headphone outputs, excluding the rear output, and then placing the unit into standby, indicated by a red LED. Standby can be engaged using the power button on the remote control or by holding the display for three seconds. For the bypass function to work correctly, the source and preamplifier connected to the HP-5.2 must use the same connection type, either RCA or XLR.

Operation is handled through a touchscreen display and the included multifunctional remote control. The touchscreen gives direct access to settings and playback options, while the remote allows adjustments from the listening position, including standby operation. This should be useful in systems where the HP-5.2 is not placed directly on a desk, but integrated into a rack or main hi-fi setup.

The published specifications show a frequency response of 20 Hz to 20 kHz, THD of 0.015% and a signal-to-noise ratio of 105 dB. The maximum power consumption is 25 W. The chassis is made from black anodized aluminum and measures 200 mm wide, 80 mm high and 260 mm deep. Net weight is 3 kg, rising to 4 kg boxed, which makes the HP-5.2 compact enough for desktop use while still substantial enough for a full hi-fi system.

Gold Note describes the HP-5.2 as a headphone amplifier designed not simply to make headphones sound more impressive, but to help them operate in a more correct, stable and credible way. That distinction is important. The feature set suggests that the company is less interested in imposing a fixed sonic signature and more focused on giving users control over how different headphones interact with the amplifier, the recording and the listening environment.
