FiiO M33

FiiO has expanded its lineup with the M33, a portable digital audio player built around the company's proprietary R2R ladder DAC architecture, a solution previously associated mainly with stationary designs. The new DAP combines this classic digital-to-analog conversion topology with an Android 13 platform and a fully developed headphone amplification stage, positioning the M33 as a mobile source for listeners seeking a more analog-leaning presentation without sacrificing modern functionality. "M33 represents our vision of bringing the magic of analog sound into the user's pocket. By implementing our proprietary R2R architecture, we achieved a level of naturalness and fluidity that cannot be replicated by conventional methods. This is a product for those who look for emotion and authenticity in music." - explains James Chung, Product Director at FiiO.

At the core of the device is a fully balanced 24-bit R2R ladder DAC built from 192 precision thin-film resistors with 0.1% tolerance. According to the manufacturer, this approach ensures strong tonal coherence together with the characteristic smoothness and saturation typically associated with larger desktop systems. Bringing this topology into a portable platform reflects a broader return to discrete digital-to-analog conversion architectures within the portable hi-fi segment. "When designing the M33, we did not want to create another player focused only on dry specifications. Our goal was to restore the joy of listening through a sound that is dense, saturated and deeply engaging. It is a return to the roots of audiophilia in its most advanced form." - notes Zhang Wei, Product Director at FiiO.

System operation is handled by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 processor supported by 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage, enabling smooth performance under Android 13 and seamless access to streaming applications. The headphone amplification stage, based on TI Burr-Brown OPA1637 components, delivers up to 1100 mW per channel in balanced mode, allowing the player to drive not only in-ear monitors but also more demanding full-size headphones. A dedicated Desktop Mode makes it possible to power the unit from an external source while bypassing the battery, reducing wear during stationary use.

The M33 also includes an AUTO EQ system that automatically adjusts frequency response for selected headphone models, as well as a 10-band parametric equalizer for manual tuning. An additional XMOS XU316 interface enables the player to function as a USB DAC with audio-video synchronization optimized for film and gaming applications. The design follows a restrained, minimalist direction inspired by classic portable audio equipment, with a 5.5-inch HD display and a graphical interface referencing cassette-deck aesthetics. The player is available in Retro Gold, Dark Blue, and black finishes. The FiiO M33 is now available internationally with an expected retail price of $799/€749/£649. Info and photos by FiiO.
